Saptapadi

Saptapadi (Saat Paak in Bangla) represents one of the most sacred rituals of a Hindu wedding. In the presence of the holy fire, Agni, the couple takes seven steps together, each step symbolizing a vow that binds them in marriage. The fire stands as a witness to these promises, representing the powerful, life-giving energies of the universe.

The painting also features Gachhkouto, an inseparable accessory of a Bengali bride throughout the wedding ceremony. This small red wooden pot, filled with vermillion (sindoor) and a silver coin, is believed to symbolize Goddess Lakshmi, invoking blessings of prosperity and abundance. Completing the scene is the Topor, the traditional headgear worn by the groom, an iconic element of Bengali weddings. Together, these elements celebrate love, tradition, and sacred union.

This painting is the last one of the Bangaliana series. The series contains a total of 5 paintings.
